Unite is the fastest growing union in New Zealand. In a few short years they have grown from nothing and successfully unionised some of the historically most difficult workplaces – fast food restaurants, call centres, cinema etc. Despite the recession, Unite has not fallen onto a defensive footing. Instead, they have taken the fight to the employers, demanding a $15/hour minimum wage, and actively supporting other striking or locked out workers, such as the recently locked out Auckland bus workers.
This is exactly the kind of union we need to win a better deal for workers.
Come to learn more about this unique union, the $15/hour “campaign for a living wage” and the necessity of fighting unions to further the interests of all workers.
Thursday 22 October, 7.30pm. Otago Room, Clubs and Societies building
All Welcome
Also, don't forget to come out on Monday October 26th (Labour day) from 2pm to support Unite's "campaign for a living wage" Dunedin campaign launch in the Octagon. Bring friends family and a picnic lunch.
With guest speaker Mike Treen, national director of Unite, and live music by Queen Anne's Revenge and other bands, it promises to be a great day of fun, sun and working class solidarity. Hosted by the International Socialist Organisation, Unite and the Maritime Union of New Zealand |
