For the past fifteen years, unions have been constantly slandered as “dinosaurs”, part of an outdated mentality of a bygone era. Nothing could be further from the truth. Unions enable workers to get a fair deal – better pay, better hours and safer working conditions. When the recession puts the squeeze on workers, threatening them with pay cuts and redundancy, belonging to the union is more essential than ever. The work of unions doesn’t stop there however. Unions have been involved in every progressive movement for change in the past century – the struggle against the Vietnam war, against apartheid, for women’s liberation and equality for LGBT people. Unions are an essential part of civilized society, and when they are damaged, inequality grows also.
