The military regime in Fiji has cracked down on its citizens once again, suspending the constitution and dismissing the high court.  John Key and Aussie PM Kevin Rudd were quick to denounce these actions as an affront to democracy.  But don’t be fooled.  Key’s talk of “democracy” is just a mask for his real business.  New Zealand governments see the Pacific as their “backyard”, to be ruled and manipulated in the same way as the USA rules Latin America.  From the occupation of Samoa that lasted until 1962, to ‘regime change’ and the rigged elections in East Timor last year, New Zealand’s policy in the Pacific has always been imperialist, not humanitarian.
