Come along and hear a short history of the revolution and join the discussion about 90 years of struggle for a better world.
At the beginning of October 1917, thousands of young NZ soldiers were slaughtered at Passchendaele in the imperialist madness of World War 1. At the end of the month, Russian soldiers and workers rebelled against this insanity and replaced the rule of the rich with radical democracy. The October revolution sparked a wave of revolutions and mutinies that put an end to the war, but failed to win socialism in Western Europe. Isolated and invaded, revolutionary democracy in Russia met a tragic fate – the triumph of Stalin’s police state. Even though the legacy of October 1917 has been distorted by Stalinists and vilified by Labour Party hacks, its memory has inspired countless freedom struggles throughout the 20th century – against colonialism, sexism, racism and social inequality. Come along and hear a short history of the revolution and join the discussion about 90 years of struggle for a better world. |
