Australia and New Zealand have recently dispatched troops and police to 'restore order" in the Solomon Islands. The use of NZ troops and military to prop up this unpopular government was hailed by MPs from all parties - including the Greens. But the chaos in the Solomons is a direct result of the colonial policies of the past and the neo-liberal economic policies of the present that have impoverished the majority of islanders. The peaceful invasion of the Solomons is yet another step towards the militarisation of international relations. |
